Lifeguard Certification Course

Lifeguard Certification Course

The lifeguarding course is now a blended course. Total of 27.5 hours long, with a 6-hour online portion.

After passing the course you will be competent in water rescues and deck emergencies. The certification you will receive is good for two years and includes LG and CPR/First Aid/AED. Must be age 15 by the END of the course, must attend all sessions, and no cell phones during class. Please make plans in advance to ensure that you have no conflicts with any of the class dates. Other than emergencies, absences will result in failure of the course.

Cost: $350 For the Lifeguard Class

  • Deepwater Retrieval: Time Limit within 1 minute 40 seconds
    Starting in the water: Sprint 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke. Perform feet first surface-dive 8ft deep, retrieve a 10lbs. brick, return to the surface without touching the bottom. Swim back 20 yards to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps. No googles are allowed.

    Swim/tread Continuously
    Complete a freestyle or breaststroke for 150 yards (goggles are allowed), then tread water for 2 minutes only using one's legs (no arms) and keeping their head above the surface. Once the tread portion is completed, finish with a further 50 yard swim.

    Tread Water
    Time Limit: 2 minutes
    Using legs only with arms under armpits or stretched upward out of water.

  • 40% of class: Using legs only with arms under armpits or stretched upward out of water Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities in pool and classroom

    40% of class: Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities in the pool and classroom

    20% of class: Final written exams. Cannot miss more than 8 of the 40 questions on Section 1 (CPR/First Aid). Cannot miss more than 6 out of 30 questions on part 1 & 8 out of the 10 questions on part 2 of Section 2 (Lifeguarding skills/Head Neck and Back)

    • Dry Change Of Clothes and Towel

    • Blank Paper and a Pen/Pencil, You Will Need To Take Notes

    • Lunch, Drinks, And Snacks

    • Males: Swim Trunks/Board Shorts, No Jammers or Swim Briefs

    • Females: One-piece suits, No 2 piece Swimsuits

    • Absolutely No Cell Phones During Class

CPR/AED/First Aid Training

We offer American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid courses at our facility. This course will certify individuals with lifesaving skills that allow them to make an impact in their local community. Please contact David Lowman at david.lowman@islandreccenter.org with any questions/concerns.

  1. CPR Challenges(Recerts): $50

  2. The American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid course will cost $100. We host one CPR/AED/First Aid course per month. Participants can register for these courses using the following link

  3. For CPR/AED/First Aid group courses please contact David Lowman at david.lowman@islandreccenter.org. The cost for these group courses will be based on the number of group members. We DO NOT offer CPR/AED/First Aid courses to single individuals, all groups must have a MINIMUM of four people. 


Red Cross Certification Courses
